Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has confirmed Gareth Bale will not be available for Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg with Bayern Munich, and is doubtful for Sunday’s El Clasico.
Bale suffered a recurrence of his ankle problem in the first leg in Germany last week, which Real won 2-1, and was forced to miss the 3-2 win over Sporting Gijon in La Liga on Saturday.
The Wales forward missed three months this season with an ankle ligament issue and Zidane said he would take it “day by day” when considering Bale for the crunch El Clasico date with Barcelona when Real will look to add to their three-point domestic lead.
“Gareth worked very hard to get back into the team after his injury,” Zidane said at his Monday press conference.
“When he came back he was desperate to be involved and now he has a small niggle that is preventing him from being fully fit.
“I hope it is nothing and in a few days he can be with us again.
“He won’t be fit for Bayern because we don’t want to take any risks.
“I hope he will be with us [for Barcelona] but we have to wait and see. It is a question of taking it day by day.”
